In this explosive episode of Cinema Relics Investigates, the team isn’t chasing a mystery from Hollywood’s past — they’re confronting one inside their own ranks.
Host Dan Lanigan has long prized his Coraline stop-motion puppet, believed to be a genuine screen-used artifact from LAIKA’s groundbreaking 2009 film. But that film has a special connection to the Cinema Relics family: Martin Meunier, one of the show’s lead investigators and a Technical Academy Award-winner, helped create the very animation technology that brought Coraline to life.
Years ago, Dan and Martin met at Comic-Con, when Martin was selling studio-made replicas of Coraline puppets directly from the LAIKA workshop. Now, more than a decade later, that history comes back to haunt them. The team turns its investigative tools inward as Dan and Martin face off in an all-or-nothing screen-match showdown to determine the puppet’s true identity.

This was part of several episodes shot over a few days at the studio space used for this series. I was asked to come in and redesign some of the lighting and camera setups for the show, as well as shoot a few episodes. This was a multi-camera setup, with only 2 operators (so we had to divide time as needed throughout the day). Overall, lots of great stories and knowledge gained going over various props and screen-used outfits.
